Survey of 500 likely voters was conducted February 8, 2012. The margin of error is +/- 4.5 percentage points.

Inside the numbers:

Santorum is viewed favorably by 49% of Ohio voters, Romney by 45%. Fifty percent (50%) at least somewhat approve of Obama’s job performance, with 31% who Strongly Approve.

Obama runs nearly even with both Republicans among male voters in Ohio. He also breaks even with Santorum among women but edges Romney by eight points among these voters.

Among voters not affiliated with either of the major parties, both Republicans post a 16-point lead over the incumbent.

In matchups with the president, Santorum earns 80% of the conservative vote in the state, compared to Romney’s 70%. Both GOP hopefuls lose moderates and liberals to the president by comparable margins.

Thirty-eight percent (38%) of Ohio voters believe the government bailouts of banks, auto companies, and insurance companies were good for the United States, but a plurality (49%) views them as bad for the country. Obama earns 81% support against both Republicans from voters who see the bailouts as a good move. Among those who regard the bailouts as a bad idea, 67% support Romney, 71% Santorum, when pitted against the president.
